BBC SPOTY 2024: Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee IS on shortlist as contenders ANNOUNCED for iconic award

Can the Paris 2024 king go one better than Alistair Brownlee back in 2016 by claiming the massive award?

STRENGTH. ENDURANCE. PERFORMANCE.

Triathlon superstar Alex Yee has been named on the shortlist of six contenders for the 2024 BBC Sports Personality Of The Year award (SPOTY).

The 26-year-old Londoner has enjoyed an incredible 2024 – topped of course by that astonishing moment when he surged past great rival Hayden Wilde to claim Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Games.

That heartstopping finish – already named by the British public as the Team GB Moment of the Games – catapulted Alex to crossover stardom, much in the same way the Brownlee brothers had been in the past.

Since then Yee has only added to his achievements by being crowned World Triathlon champion for the first time in October. Quite the 12 months for this brilliant talent.

And on Monday morning we got the breaking news that Alex – already named SJA Sportsman of the Year for 2024 – is firmly in the running for the biggest end-of-year award of all – the iconic SPOTY.

SPOTY 2024 shortlist announced

Alex is joined on the shortlist of contenders by five other unbelievable sporting talents. They are para cycling legend Sarah Storey, Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson, Darts sensation Luke Littler, Real Madrid and England soccer star Jude Bellingham and England cricket great Joe Root.

When is BBC SPOTY 2024?

The winner of the SPOTY award will be announced on Tuesday December 17 during a glittering awards ceremony in Manchester, England. The show will air live on the BBC between 1900 and 2100 UK time.

The winner of the award will be determined by a public vote and we’ll post details of how to vote here as soon as they are confirmed. Time to get behind Alex as he bids for unprecedented triathlon recognition.

The closest we have had to a triathlon SPOTY winner was the great Alistair Brownlee back in 2016 – he finished second behind tennis legend Andy Murray.
