On a wet and windy day, Marten Van Riel conquered the elements and his competition at the San Francisco T100 to take a maiden victory on the T100 Triathlon World Tour.

The Belgian, who had been widely regarded as one of the firm favourites ahead of the race, prevailed in a three-way sprint finish with Kiwi Kyle Smith and reigning IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion Rico Bogen of Germany.

Further back, Olympic medalists and triathlon icons Alistair Brownlee and Javier Gomez struggled to find their feet after solid starts, eventually finishing in 14th and 16th respectively.
