Andy Tarry and Jenny Latham are crowned English Champions at this year’s Triathlon England –National Triathlon Championships

Andy Tarry, from Nottingham, and Jenny Latham, from Leeds, were crowned English Champions at this weekend’s Blithfield event, as they won their respective categories on the sprint distance course at Sunday’s Triathlon England – National Triathlon Championships at Blithfield Reservoir, Staffordshire.

In the men’s event, Andy Tarry, 43, secured the 40 – 44 age group Triathlon England National title with a winning time of 1:02:02. Andy, clearly overjoyed by his achievement, said: “I’m obviously always delighted when I win! The older you get, the tougher it gets. There was some really decent competition this year; I believe the times were very close.”

Jenny, 25, was first past the finishing line for the women in a time of 1:09:02 and was crowned Triathlon England – National Championship in the 25 – 29 age group. A delighted Jenny added: “I am really pleased with my performance at Blithfield Sprint Tri, especially my cycle and run. The race is always well organised and the marshals are friendly and helpful - especially when my timing chip came off in the swim! It was great to come back and race this course again and will be back in the future to defend my title!”

With the 1,000 places taken up in record time this year, it shows interest in the sport has increased dramatically. Triathlon England have also found that more women in particular are getting involved and 'giving it a tri’ for themselves. In 2012, over 700 triathlons, duathlons and aquathlons took place in England, seeing over 125,000 people competing in races and many of them for the first time.

Jem Lawson, Chair of Triathlon England, said: “It’s great news to see how interest in the sport is continuing to grow and we are excited to say that our 2013 Triathlon England - National Triathlon Championships is already proving very popular. With event sell-outs, it shows our National Championships are growing, and we hope that this in turn will encourage many more to get involved. Our memberships have been increasing steadily and we hope the value we offer will inspire even more to get involved.”
