Weekend roundup in full Posted on: Tuesday 6th May 2008 Bookmark This | Print This Page | Send To A Friend It wouldn't be a Bank Holiday without a Thames Turbo Triathlon at Hampton Pool and the race this morning could hardly have been in greater contrast to the miserably freezing conditions of Easter Monday! The organisers reckon that times were on average four minutes quicker and the winner, Dan Corner (Shorter Rochford Exclusive Ranges) made it home in 0:55:21 with Jonathan Hotchkiss breathing down his neck all the way. Edwina Carter (Optima Racing Team) won the women's race in 1:03:15. You'll find a complete set of results here, check out the Tri247 contingent of John Levison and Bob Holloway while you're there. Another May Day Bank Holiday stalwart is the Tonbridge Lions Triathlon in Kent - it's been around so long that even the Editor remembers doing it a couple of times! Winners today were Ben Ward in 1:01:42 and Rachel Joyce in 1:05:10. A full set of results is here. Equally at home on a Bank Holiday Monday, and the Editor has done this one as well (just don't ask when...) is the Hart Leisure Triathlon Winners here were Alexander Lewis (Team Lewis) in 0:57:38 and Lucy Chittenden (Farnham Tri) in 1:05:59. A full set of results is here. Sunday's racesIt seems like the World Cup series is trying to match Formula 1 racing with a race taking place just about every weekend! This weekend saw the World Cup series head to Richards Bay in South Africa for the fifth World Cup this year, and we've only just reached May! In the men's race; current World Champion Daniel Unger (GER), who up until today surprisingly hadn't won a World Cup, took the honours ahead of Matt Reed (USA), who was closely followed by last year's winner and local favourite Hendrik DeVilliers (RSA). The only Brit in the race was Richard Stannard, who had his best race of the season so far finishing in 12th place. In the women's race there was another first timer; Carolyn Murray, whose previous best was an eighth place at the Corner Brook World Cup in 2005, shocked the women's field by storming to victory ahead of Felicity Abram (AUS) and Sydney Olympic bronze medallist Magali Di Marco Messmer (SUI). Kerry Lang finished slightly down on the field in 25th and Emma Davis (IRL) finished ninth.
A full set of results can be found here. Next on the agenda was last month's Epic Event, the St Croix 70.3, which saw a host of top international athletes gather on the largest of the US Virgin Islands to take part in what is considered as one of the toughest 70.3 events. For Great Britain there was a very exciting moment when super biker, Felicity Hart, led the women's field which was packed full of current and past World Champions, a valiant effort and no doubt just a glimpse of greater things to come. In the men's race, last year's winner and Ironman World Championship silver medallist, Craig Alexander (AUS), had a relatively easy day in the office winning by over three minutes to Marino Vanhoenacker (BEL) and fellow compatriot, Richie Cunningham in third place. In the women's race the current 70.3 World Champion, Mirinda Carfrae (AUS), dominated the field and came home nine minutes ahead of Nina Kraft (GER), who was very closely followed by third placed Bree Wee (USA). Felicity Hart finished in a very commendable fifth place. As yet we have no news from Julie Dibens, Joanna Zeiger or Karen Smyers (USA) who all looked to have DNF'd.
Full results can be found here Considered by Inside Triathlon as the toughest half Ironman on the planet, the Wildflower in California saw Chris McCormack (AUS) draw equal with Cameron Widoff's record of four victories at this year's legendary event. But he didn't have it all his own way, Eneko Llanos (ESP) went head to head with the current Ironman World Champion, and McCormack only managed to break the tough Spaniard in the last mile of the race. Chris Lieto (USA) rounded up the podium in third place. Britain's Fraser Cartmell was fifth, apparently the Americans haven't quite worked out who he is yet - they seemed very surprised that anyone could stay up with the leaders who they didn't actually recognise... In the women's race, Samantha Mc Glone (CAN) celebrated her third victory at Wildflower having spent the bike battling it out with World Long Course Triathlon Champion, Leanda Cave (GBR). Leanda was in contention early on the run but couldn't stay with the fast running Canadian over the hilly half marathon course. Pip Taylor (AUS) who had led the swim finished in third place.
For a full report and results click here On the domestic front, East London Triathletes ran the first of their re-formatted Dragonslayer Triathlon event as an MTB triathlon as opposed to the traditional duathlon and it seems to have gone down well. Winners were Declan Doyle (Optima Racing Team) in 1:11:32 and a certain Fiona Moorhead-Lane who placed eighth overall in 1:19:58. A full set of results are here. Organiser Ray Gibbs reports that Euan Lees (Ful-on Tri) led the 750m swim out into T1, in his return to racing this season and preparation for the European Triathlon championships next weekend in Lisbon. Nik Haynes’ XTERRA credentials, however saw him quickly take control at the front of the race over the four-lap non-technical and well marshalled MTB course. The pursuing men’s field included many triathletes switching their road for mountain bikes for this event and yielded speedy performances from Matthew Elliot (Optima Racing), Tom Hewins (East London Tri), Keith Brewster (Crystal Palace Triathletes) and Roger Fowkes (Hillingdon Triathletes). The overall winner Declan Doyle charged through the field on the bike and took over the lead during the 5km off road run, to finish in 1:11:32 with a winning margin of a minute over Nik Haynes who finished second, Euan Lees in third and Matthew Elliot in fourth place, making it a Ful-on Tri and Optima Racing team sweep. Ex-swimmer, Mette Nielson (Optima Racing) led the ladies out of the swim with the leading men’s pack, soon overtaken by Fiona Moorehead-Lane (East London Tri) on the first lap of the bike. Julie Miroy (Full-On Tri) and Katie Ward (East London Tri) closed down the gap on Mette over the bike and run, however the placings remained unchanged with Fiona extending her lead to finish in 1:19:58 and eighth overall. Mette Nielson finished second in 1:27:26, Julie Miroy third and Katie Ward fourth. Jo Haley went down to the New Forest Triathlon to support a couple of athletes that she has been coaching and sent us this report: Well.. after a week of will-they-swim-won't-they-swim, the water temperature at Ellingham Water Ski Lake had risen to a balmy 14.5 degrees by race day meaning the swim remained at the full 1.1k for the 300 brave souls who lined up on the start line at 7:30am on a mild, wind-free morning in early May. The bike course, however, was slightly shortened due to a gravel problem on one of the roads. Obviously eager to get out of the cold, a lead group of six men exited the swim together with Nick Buis being (Southampton Tri) credited with the quickest swim (plus T1 split). He, however, rapidly lost ground during bike course and James Gilfillan (Primera Sport) came into T2 with a 2 minute lead over his nearest rival Colin Dixon with Neil Harris (Team VO2) a further minute back in third. These were to be the final finishing positions with what was almost unanimously agreed to be a tough run failing to make a difference and Gilfillan crossed the line with nearly a minute and a half in hand over Dixon. The ladies race too was a well-fought affair. The first two exited the lake together with the third hot on their heels but Sophie Whitworth (Planet X) posted one of only two female sub-hour splits on the bike to open up a gap over her competitors which neither eventual second placed Tracy Cook or third placed Helen Smith could close on the subsequent run. Thanks has to go to Richard and Joanne Iles for another well organised race with no-one I spoke to having anything but praise for the way the event was run. We look forward to rest of the season in the New Forest with anticipation! James Gilfillan's winning time was 1:44:17 and Sophie Whitworth's was 1:59:22. A full set of results are here. Rugby Tri Club organised its annual Spring Chick women's only events and the sprint distance race was won by Lindsey Sherring in 1:05:34, full results are here. The novice event was won by Gillian Jubb in 1:00:17, results for that race are here. Kudu Bikes put on the Kendal Spring Sprint Triathlon and the winners here were Beau Smith in 1:08:29 and Louise Kelly in 1:15:51. There's a full set of results here with a short report from the organiser. The Wick Mini Triathlon was won by Torquil Clyde in 0:34:08 and Becky May in 0:43:27. You'll have to look at the Wick Tri Club website for a full set of results as someone has turned them into a graphic which we can't break down for uploading on Tri247... The Cardiff Try-a-Tri event was won by Patrick Lees in 0:56:43 and Julia Warner in 0:58:35. Full results are here. Hillingdon Triathletes held another of their regular Minet Park Duathlons with Peter Cottington taking the win in 0:48:33 and Melissa Arkinstall winning the women's race in 0:54:12. Full results are here. The club also hosted a race for junior and Tristar athletes, the results for that are here. Chase Race have moved their events into the water with the first of their summer triathlon series being the Three Spires Triathlon. Winners here were Alistair Johnson (Team Chase Race) in 0:59:26 and Rachel Stoakes (Mammoth/TCUK) in 1:05:29. Full results are here. Missing from the calendar was the Tewkesbury Park Duathlon but Stuart Steele's StuWeb site reports that Lee Rankin was the winner in 1:14:03 with Fran Osbourne the fastest woman in 1:28:46. A full set of results is available on Stuart's site, here. Sunday mornings wouldn't be the same without another in the Aldershot Duathlon Series, this time the winners were John Fitzpatrick in 0:58:07 and Helen Ladd in 1:06:47. A full set of results is here. One Step Beyond's Southwell Sprint Triathlon was won by Andy Tarry in 0:46:33 and Hannah Mulcaster in 0:55:31. Full results are here. The Warwick Triathlon, the first of the MIG Events races, was won by Stuart Tipton in 1:00:43. He must have had a bit of a shock as the first woman was just behind him, Zoe Hanson finished second overall in 1:01:29. Full results are here. They also staged a novice race and the results for that are here. The Trisports Bedford Sprint Series got underway with its first race on Sunday. Winners were Oliver Mytton (Oxford Tri Club) in 1:02:03 and Carla Fisher (Bedford Traktors) in 1:11:47. A full set of results are here. Epic Events staged their Horwich Triathlon on Sunday and the winners were Martin Cain (GMC Fire Service) in 2:06:49 and Nicola King (Tri Preston) in 2:29:03. A full set of results, courtesy of John Schofield's UK Results site (www.ukresults.net) are here. MIA so far for Sunday are results for the Bishopbriggs races in Glasgow, VOtwo's Newquay Adventure Race, and the Kendal Spring Sprint Triathlon. Saturday's racesThe Accellerade Mid-Wales Ultra Triathlon was won by Shaun Lamb in 16 hours 53 minutes and Jo Carritt in 18 hours 44 minutes. The organisers report that Shaun led the field from T1 to the finish. The swim was shortened due to particularly cold water, and nine of the 11 starters finished the race - a brilliant result given the toughness of the event (swim approx 1½miles, bike 175 miles, run 32miles) and the unrelenting hills. The weather held up almost throughout, big respect to all the competitors and their support crews. A full report, photos and video will go up on the accelerace site www.accelerace.co.uk where you'll also find information on the Welsh Ultra and the West Highlands Ultra. Saturday also saw the 24th running of Club La Santa's Volcano Triathlon. Belgian Bert Jammaer, (fourth in last year's Ironman Lanzarote) led the race from the start and finished with a clear difference of more than five minutes in 1:59:33 (and he took it easy on the run) upon runner-up Gregorio C·ceres Morales, and seven minutes away from Brit living in Lanzarote, Nicholas Ward MuÒoz. In the women's race, the Belgian FranÁoise Wellekens took the victory with a time of 2:20:04, followed by young Danish triathlete, Michelle Vesterby, and the Dutch Heleen bij de Vaate who came in third. Loads of Brits in the results, Gary Gerrard was fourth, Stephen Barratt was tenth, Darelle Parker was seventh woman followed by Anne Fallows, Tamsin Lewis and Anna Ward. Full results are here. Results for the Soll Vale Tristar Duathlon are here. Results for the Warwickshire Children's Aquathlon are here. MIA are results for the Fast Blast Knockout Triathlon at Stirling University and the Washington Aquathlon. ![]()
