Rarely has there been such a dramatic finale to the women’s IRONMAN World Championship.
Lucy Charles-Barclay and Taylor Knibb had gone head-to-head from early on the bike to deep into the run – until suddenly both were out of the race as the heat and humidity of Hawaii and the intensity of their battle took its toll.
Charles-Barclay, who won the previous time the race was held in Kona in 2023, was first to exit with around nine miles of the marathon to go when her husband Reece stepped in to make the required call.
That prompted an outpouring of emotion which has now continued as Lucy and Reece themselves took to Instagram to talk through the moment and their reflections since.
‘I’m endlessly grateful’
Lucy wrote: “This race has been the heartbeat of our lives for the past decade, everything my husband and I do revolves around this one day on the Big Island.
“Yesterday, I raced with my heart. I stuck to my plan, nailed my nutrition, and used all of my usual cooling strategies. It was all going so well… until it wasn’t. I’m endlessly grateful for the love and care my husband showed in stepping in and taking me off the course.
“Health will always come first. As special as this race is, there will always be another start line, another chance, another year for the history books. That’s the unpredictable nature of Kona; it’s what draws us all in, to its beauty and its brutality.”
Knibb would then get tantalisingly close to the finish – and the win – until she herself could go no further and had to watch helplessly as Solveig Løvseth ran past on her way to victory.
Even then there was more drama as Kat Matthews closed to within 35 seconds at the finish – the only closer women’s race came when Julie Moss crawled over the line in 1982 to put the event on the global map.
Lucy added: “Congratulations to the incredible women on the podium, and a special thank you to @taylorknibb for an epic battle out there, may we both recover well and come back stronger for the next one.
“Thank you so much for all the love and support, it will make this tough blow a little easier to process.”

‘Heartbreak and relief’
And Reece summed up his thoughts as follows: “Yesterday was one of the most emotionally charged days of my life. It’s hard to put into words what it felt like to watch Lucy leading the race we’ve built our lives around, only to see it unravel so suddenly.
“A strange mix of heartbreak and relief. Heartbreak for what might have been, relief that Lucy is safe today. We came close to a line you never want to cross. For me, as her husband, it was the easiest call I’ll ever make.
“For now, I rest in the simple relief that this morning I woke up beside her. Grateful beyond words that she’s safe and well.
“The heartbreak will take time to settle, but we’ll face it together, learn from it, and rise stronger. Thank you, Kona. You remind us, again, what truly matters.”
No more words needed and we wish Lucy – and Taylor – swift and full recoveries.
