Kat Matthews has been named as the UK Armed Forces Sportswoman of the year in recognition of her stellar achievements.

Kat, who won IRONMAN Texas in remarkable fashion in April, continues to defy expectations after a life-threatening bike crash last year left her unsure of her very future in the sport. Now, the British Army physio has her sights set on a glory bid at the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona in October.

The prestigious award is a timely reminder of all Matthews has achieved so far in the sport, and all that she still has to accomplish after a great start to the season.

“I went into these awards in central London not having perspective of this award. It has taken me a few days to really reflect and appreciate it’s gravity to the UKAF. By recognising an individual, we recognise the entire team of people that is behind one.

“This award represents the opportunities that sport enables in the military. It represents the pathway of commitment to excellence alongside a primary military job role. Excellence not only for yourself but for the team.

“Taking the position of front runner, a platform to demonstrate what is possible for a team for everyone to see and learn what they want/can/choose to from it.

“I am honoured to play my part in our Armed Forces, one small and debatably insignificant part but a part nonetheless. It is my privilege to represent my team.”

Praise for Matthews

British Army Sport summarised why Matthews means so much to the institution, and what makes her such a throughly deserved recipient of the award.

“Very well deserved Kat! You epitomise this award and have utilised the opportunities and pathway available on your sporting journey, whilst still remaining true to your original self.

“Having been part of journey from this end and watching your tenacity, resillience, pride, and humility, we are delighted it has been recognised by the UK Armed Forces Sport Board. Many Congratulations!”

Matthews will next race the PTO Tour US Open in Milwaukee at the beginning of August, where the PTO World #15 will race for only the fourth time since her crash and take on the very best in the world for the first time this season.
